PC sales showed small growth in 2002

The PC market picked up slightly in 2002, according to figures from Gartner Dataquest, but there was still no signs of a strong rebound in the sector.

The PC market picked up slightly in 2002, according to figures from Gartner Dataquest, but there was still no signs of a strong rebound in the sector.

According to the research firm’s preliminary figures, worldwide PC shipments totalled 132.4 million units in 2002, a 2.7% increase from 2001. This was only a small rise, but better than the 4% contraction the market suffered in 2001.

"In the second half of 2002, the worldwide PC market had two consecutive quarters of year-on-year PC shipment growth," says Charles Smulders, vice president of Gartner Dataquest's computing platforms worldwide group. "Despite this growth, we still believe PC market demand is still at the bottom of a growth cycle and has yet to show evidence of a significant upturn."

The completion of the HP/Compaq merger meant that new HP was able to hold off Dell to top the shipment charts. Despite a 9.3% year-on-year decline in shipments, HP retained a 16.2% market share, 1% more than Dell. Furthermore, even though HP is still integrating Compaq’s PC range and devising its go to market strategy, it racked up a second quarter of sequential growth in the fourth quarter of 2002.

Rounding out the top five were IBM, in third, which held a 6% market share, followed by NEC with 3.4% and Toshiba with 3.2%.
