BenQ study predicts surge in LCD uptake

Digital lifestyle product player, BenQ, reports on consumer research conducted on the fall of CRT in the face of rising LCD popularity.

According to research conducted by BenQ, the demand for liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors in the Middle East will surge in 2003, leading towards the eventual replacement of the common cathode-ray tube (CRT).

“We found that an overwhelming number of people prefer the look and feel of LCD monitors over the more commonly-used cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors,” said Robert Dung, managing director, BenQ Middle East.

“As a new generation of slim, stylish space-saving LCD monitors hit the market in 2003 and, as the average price stabilizes, we’ll see that preference convert into rapidly accelerating sales. There’s a strong demand for the newest and best technology, and 2003 will really deliver that.”

One of BenQ’s most popular product categories through 2002, the company’s long-term prediction is that LCDs will reach a desktop computer penetration rate of around 30% within the region by 2005, with figures rising to 100% by 2007, when outdated CRT technology will be replaced totally. Currently, the figure stands at around 10%.

In addition to the appeal of the LCD’s slimline form factor, BenQ’s research also indicates that consumers are warming to LCD for its perceived health benefits. LCD monitors, unlike CRT monitors, emit no radiation. BenQ believes that this factor will impact buying decisions in 2003, particularly among those users whose jobs require that they spend extended periods sitting at their PCs.
