Micromuse is looking to strengthen its position in the service provider and carrier market with the acquisition of Lumos Technologies and the incorporation of the vendor’s software solutions into its own Netcool management suite.

The acquisition, which was due for completion at the end of December, will boost Netcool’s ability to manage and monitor traffic at transport — Layer 1— and access levels. Additionally, Lumos’ 35 employees and existing base of 100 equipment vendor licensees will provide Micromuse with further development capabilities.

“Lumos Technologies creates agent software for element managers and Layer 1 devices,” says Kerry Koutsikos, regional manager, Micromuse, Middle East & Levant. “The key thing is that they sell through equipment vendors and OEMs, so there’s over 100 different types of equipment vendors out there that are using their agents for development managers. They have a large installed base and it now gives us access to widely adapted technology,” he continues.

With integration of Netcool and the Lumos solution expected to be completed early this year, Micromuse expects to have a deliverable solution for customers in Q1 or Q2 of this year. The integrated offering will ease management tasks for network administrators by compiling detailed information and data streams from a host of network elements and enabling them to quickly identify any potential network problems.

“Once integration is complete Netcool will be able to collect much more detailed aggregated events, especially from the Layer devices. It’s [Lumos solution] giving us not just raw events, but in depth information events about a particular device and what is happening within that device,” explains Koutsikos.
