Canadian authorities arrested on (Dec. 8) Sunday a man they said swindled hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past ten years from Arabs, Muslims and Islamic institutions, Asharq Al Awsat reported.

The authorities said the individual identified only as M.M. and holder of an Israeli passport, was able to defraud people by pretending to be a Muslim personality, a prominent Arab figure or a friend of one.

Once contact was established, the impostor would then mention that his money, air ticket and passport were stolen and ask for thousands of dollars.

The paper said the individual in question would single out Islamic institutions, Muslim and Arab personalities that were known to be proactive and engaged in philanthropy.

M.M. was successful in extracting hundreds of thousands of dollars from victims in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia, the paper said, because he was proficient in English and various Arabic dialects.

M.M. was arrested on charges related to forgery.
