The Middle East Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) has doubled its facilities from three to six channels at the Dubai broadcasting centre. To facilitate the expansion the broadcaster has ordered additional equipment from automation solution provider Harris.

“We are extremely pleased with the performance of the Harris ADC-100 automation system, which we installed last year, and also with the technical support we have received from the Harris office here in Dubai,” says Ihab El Baba, technical director for MBC. “It was a natural choice for us to continue to work with Harris as we expand our facilities.”

For the last year MBC has been transmitting programming for three family channels from a single control suite, broadcasting via satellite not only to the Middle East, but also to expatriates in Europe and the Americas.

The MBC transmission suite already includes video servers from Seachange and Flexicart robot tape libraries from Sony. The Harris Global Media Transfer (GMT) product has provided intelligent media asset management to ensure that programming and interstitials are transferred from tape to a server, or between servers, in time for transmission. GMT is proven over a large number of installations to be a completely secure and reliable media management and network control device.

Additionally, Harris has installed Harris Air Protect that offers MBC higher levels of resilience and security. It guarantees that a back-up channel protects any failure on the main video server. The ADC100 is able to switch instantaneously from main to back-up channel without any program interruption.

“We are delighted that MBC has continued confidence in our products and support,” says Jean-Michel Seigneur, EMEA managing director of Harris Automation Solutions. “Its facility is a prime example of a modern and efficient transmission facility and will hopefully pave the way for other Harris installations in the region.”
