Oki laid on the theatrics when promoting its new fast, budget colour printers in Prague last week.

In front of an audience comprising hundreds of stunned channel partners, actors posing as small businessmen harangued speakers demanding affordable colour printing for all. Oki then went on to state that its 5000 series printers were the ideal solution for small businesses that want fast, colour printing. Oki claims that its sub-$1,000 single-pass LED printers are capable of a colour print speeds of 12 pages per minute (ppm). This is a major performance breakthrough. Oki claims that this 12ppm colour speed is three times faster than its nearest rival. It puts this down to the printers’ use of single-pass technology.

Andrew Montgomery, managing director of Oki Europe, explained: “We believe individuals in business and small workgroups have a right to print in colour and mono without waiting, having to compromise on quality and without paying extra for the privilege. A lot of people are frustrated because inkjet printers are not delivering in a business set-up. They print colour but they’re too slow and uneconomical. Oki’s 5000 series LED printers, however, can deliver 12ppm colour printing for less than $1,000. Colour LED printing is not a make or break issue for the industry but it is a major opportunity. The total printer market is stable but the colour share is set to rise.”

Although this is a performance breakthrough for colour laser printing budget mono laser printers still cost up to 75% less than the 5000 series. Mr Montgomery added: “Businesses that believe that mono has served them well in the past and so there is no need to change, are the kind of businesses that will not survive.”

The C5100n prints 12pppm in colour and 20ppm mono, has a resolution of 600 x 1,200dpi, integrated networking and 32MB of memory. The C5300n has a similar specification but with a faster processor and 64MB of memory. Oki will rollout the new printers in January 2003.

LED is a solid state printing technology and offers two main benefits. First of all, it can be compacted allowing for relatively petite but powerful machines. Second, it is more reliable since there are no moving parts.
