Nokia is attempting to encourage local software developers to create more applications for its phone platforms, with the launch of a new competition. The Nokia Series 60 Challenge will award developers for the best applications created locally in Symbian, MMS and MIDP Java, in a bid to increase localised software.

Series 60, which is included on the 7650 and 3650 handsets, is a software platform aimed at mobile phone users. It is intended for use on single-handed operation devices, with high quality colour screens, and combines telephony, personal information management, web browser and messaging functions.

“We have seen tremendous growth in demand in the Middle East for mobile software,” said Jarmo Hostio, business development manager, Nokia Middle East. “Following the success of previous contests, Nokia wanted to encourage developers in the region to create local software and software using local languages, including Arabic, Farsi and Urdu. Given the great talent based in this region, we look forward to the results of their creative efforts.”

The contest includes prizes for both local and EMEA developers, with cash prizes for best Java application, best Symbian application, most innovative application and best overall locally developed application. Winners will also receive the opportunity to develop business with an invite to the Series 60 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, and the chance to showcase applications at a European trade fair in Spring 2003. All developer contestants will receive Nokia 3650 handsets and free testing of applications and technical support.
