Al Majd Television has confirmed the launch of its two channels dedicated to the greater understanding of Islam. The English channel, however, is coming from Cape Town in South Africa, rather than Dubai, as announced.

According to the company spokesman in Dubai, that's because the Arabic service realised that it would need far more space for studio sets than originally thought, so it is taking over the whole of the former Zen TV space at DMC. There was plenty of pre-recorded material available for the English service, so transmission was switched to studios in Cape Town, South Africa, where Al Majd is setting up a purpose-built studio to begin producing its regular weekly feature programmes.

These include titles like The Money File, Medicine and Islam and Media Watch. According to the spokesman, they are in production now and could be on air before the end of Ramadan.

The company says the start of transmissions was smooth, with a world first in the live broadcast of Evening Prayers from the Grand Mosque in Mecca. It is the first time they have been subtitled in English.

Other programming included in the test transmission is a recorded lesson each night from a 'studio mosque', which was specially built for the roll-out in Media City, Cairo.

Al Majd executives are now actively seeking a permanent home for the English channel. Among the options being considered are Cape Town, Cairo and Malaysia.
