Internet Security Systems (ISS) has come top of IDC’s annual intrusion detection/vulnerability assessment market share report. The vendor held 27% of the entire worldwide market and 65% more revenue than the number two firm.

IDC’s figures show a fragmenting market with 29 vendors being named, up from 18 a year ago, along with a large “others” category, which had a 13% market share. The analyst house adds that the ID&VA software market will continue to expand, with a predicted compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19% expected through to 2006.

Given this growth, IDC contends that there is a need for better integration among intrusion detection and vulnerability assessment agents.

“The ID&VA market continues to gain traction as more enterprises adopt the technology,” said Charles Kolodgy, research manager, IDC.

“The products in this market are required elements for a complete layered defense. Internet Security Systems has led this market for the past three years and is addressing areas IDC sees as future trends with the introduction of intrusion prevention, integration of host and network intrusion protection and the correlation of intrusion detection and vulnerability assessment events to reduce false alarms.”

“Internet Security Systems continues to set the pace in the ID&VA markets, capturing the market leader position for the third consecutive year amid tough economic conditions and despite an increasing number of emerging vendors all vying for market share,” adds Tom Noonan, ISS’s chairman & CEO.

“This report validates our success in delivering the most powerful value proposition for effective threat protection on the market. With the tremendous advancements we’ve made in delivering the RealSecure Protection Platform that not only detects but protects and prevents attacks on networks, servers and desktops, we look forward to leading the market for years to come,” he continues.
