Etisalat is launching high speed internet access for home users, enabling them to enjoy speeds of up to 2Mb/s. The service is expected to go live before the end of this year, offering customers the choice of 1Mb/s or 2Mb/s, up to six times faster than the existing Al Shamil service.

“The new Al Shamil 1Mb/s and 2Mb/s packages are targeted at domestic internet users who use the web extensively,” said Maroua Naim, general manager, EIM.

“Subscribers will have superior use of high bandwidth applications from video streaming to online gaming, whilst dramatically speeding up down-load times of large documents.”

The new package will be priced at Dhs550 per month for the 1Mb/s service, and Dhs950 per month for the 2Mb/s service, with an initial registration charge of Dhs200. Al Shamil currently offers a maximum speed of 384Kb/s, and has a total of 10,200 subscribers.

Etisalat has also launched prepaid GPRS, following the successful launch of postpaid GPRS at the start of 2002, which has so far attracted over 7,000 subscribers.
