Iranian server and desktop builder Emachine, has come up with the novel offering of a set top box for your TV that allows you to connect to the internet and send e-mail.

Massoud Nili, production manager for the company’s UAE operation, said that it already had a very positive response to its launch in Iran and that the company is looking for distribution deals to market the product in other markets in the Middle East. However, at present Emachine is still in the process of getting the Arabic language version of the interface completed. The English version is ready as well as Farsi for Iran.

“We are looking at the less devleoped countries at the moment where a full blown PC might not be cost effective. We did research that shows that most people use a home PC mainly for the internet and e-mail so for mum and the children where sophistication is not important, we think it will be successful,” he explained.

The box is based on a 56k v.90 modem and an ADSL version will be available in the future, but Emachine does not see the need for it at present. It is also looking to do deals with ISPs to bundle the hardware and software with an internet account to get people online quickly and cheaply, Nili added.

Emachine also offers a range of sophisticated hardware from high-end desktops to eight-way enterprise servers. It is still developing its channel in the Middle East at large, but as an Intel Premium Provider it should find offers soon.
