3Com has announced an extension to its range of Embedded Firewall Solutions. There is now a Firewall PC card for desktops and notebooks and updated versions of the desktop and server PCI cards and the Embedded Firewall Policy Server. The elements of the solution all include built in 10/100 LAN connectivity and the capability to create secure network connections beyond the corporate perimeter firewall.

One of the key features of the Embedded Firewall Solution is that allows vulnerable areas such as remote PCs and notebooks to be managed by ‘people who understand security objectives and policies’ according to Jaclynn Bumback, analyst at In-Stat/MDR.

“As an enterprise class security solution, the new centrally managed 3Com Firewall Cards enable a much-needed approach to security that extends stringent security policies to end systems—and also provides a way to connect, manage and secure remote desktop and notebook PCs in an easy and cost-effective manner,” said James Tell, senior director, security strategy, 3Com.

The company emphasised that because the solution is based on both hardware and software, it is much more tamper resistant than other solutions. The combination of a hardware base and centralised management should deter attacks from within and outside network perimeters, it said.

Other features include management of remote users via broadband VPN connections and an ability to disable a remote PC via the card if a breach is detected. 3Com calls it ‘defence-in-depth’ network security.

The products are shipping now and range in price from $179 for a desktop PCI card to $995 for the Embedded Firewall Policy Server version 1.5.
