Middle East Broadcasting (MBC) has announced plans to launch a new English language entertainment channel. Targeting “all residents of the gulf looking for escapism and fun,” MBC2 will show a combination of movies, comedy serials, soap operas and news.

“The vision is to deliver the best of English language movies, entertainment and news programming to a mass audience in the Middle East in a fashion that is compatible with Arabic language, culture and taste,” says Andrew Maskall, marketing manager, MBC. “We have the highest rating international movies and entertainment programmes, which will run alongside our English language news service, produced here at MBC’s headquarters in Dubai Media City.”

The channel will be free-to-air with the majority of programmes being brought in from large distributors such as Warner Brothers and Fox.

“Top quality entertainment shows have not previously been available in the region on a free-to-air basis,” explains Maskall. “MBC is already the brand leader in the region but to move the industry forward, to continue to innovate, we have to bring in more channels and offer more choice, hence MBC 2.”

The new channel will be broadcast on Arabsat and aims to launch before the end of the year.

MBC are also planning to launch Arabia, a 24-hour Arabic news channel that, according to Maskall, will launch “very soon.” The channel will be completely based in DMC and aims to be an “Arabic CNN.”
