Kuwait Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) is throwing its weight behind the anti-piracy movement in the country. The business forum has teamed up with the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information to help set up a number of awareness programs and to enforce intellectual property rights (IPR) legislation.

“The enforcement of the copyright law in Kuwait early 2000 has proved to be a significant move towards improving IPR awareness,” comments Dr. Yousef Al Ali, director legal department, KCCI.

“However, we have realised that in order to reduce the illegal use of software, we need to work in co-operation with the various groups involved. We feel that it is important to educate the business community and raise awareness about the consequences of using such software,” he adds.

KCCI is already planning to host a seminar on IPR early next week, which will bring together both BSA and the Ministry of Information. The seminar will focus on benefits of using legalised software and attempt to draw up a systematic plan on working toward it. The KCCI and BSA will highlight their participation as a local and international group that will come together and express their mutual aim on working toward a common goal.

“Kuwait has extensive potential for the development of Arabic software for the regional markets and has established itself as a leading provider of rich Arabic content,” comments Dr Al Ali.

“However, it is extremely important that IPR awareness is implemented to improve a credited software market. A more effective procedure will help create more security for Kuwait-based software developers and help improve the country’s economy,” he adds.
