Direct Computer Systems, established in Dubai in 1987, is developing a ‘new technologies’ division in an attempt to be the first to bring new computer systems to the Middle East. Established only one month ago, the division currently employs five people.

Samer Bayrakdar, general manager of DCS, explains: “The division is working hard to make DCS a distributor of the latest electronics in the region. Instead of waiting for new technologies to reach us — for manufacturers to approach us for distribution — we are developing this new division that is responsible for making the first move.

"We want to get the latest plasma screens, the smallest PCs, the slimmest LCDs, and the highest-capacity flash memory cards. And we hope to be the first to sell the latest 3GB desktop PC systems.”

The company administrates its Middle East operations from Dubai, with satellite offices in Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

More recently it has moved into Africa and CIS states. DCS is particularly strong in components and as a systems integrator — PCs and servers — based on Intel building-block architecture. There is also a tenders division that handles large one-off projects for government departments, large companies and universities.

Bayrakdar says that DCS is also looking to create a sister company — to be based in Jebel Ali — for construction and integration of systems. Its current manufacture base is in Sharjah but, “because demand has exceeded expectations” DCS wants to develop a more central, larger hub for its operations.

“At the moment we sell anything between three and four thousand systems per month (not including tenders) and we are projecting growth of 100% in the next eighteen months,” says Bayrakdar.
