Bargain hunters turn out in full force

The number of bargain hunters heading towards Computer Shopper appears to be well up on last year. The volume of visitors to Gitex’s retail arm dropped last year, but, DWTC is claiming that 16,000 have already visited shopper.

The number of bargain hunters heading towards Computer Shopper appears to be well up on last year. The number of visitors to Gitex’s retail arm dropped last year, largely in response to the attacks of 9/11. However, early numbers from show organiser, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), indicate that 16,000 visited shopper in the first three days of Gitex 2002.

“Compared to 2001, the visitor response this year is a lot stronger. The level of transactions has also increased significantly,” says Pankaj Nadkarni, international project manager for Computer Shopper. “We are expecting visitor attendance and sales to peak even further in the final three days of the show, ” adds Nadkarni.
Notebooks deals again seem to have eclipsed traditional desktop sales. The partners of Compaq/HP, Fujitsu Siemens, Acer, Dell, IBM and Dell are all out in force touting notebook hardware.

Among some of the barmy prices on offer was Dell’s Inspiron 2650, which packed Intel’s mobile Pentium 4 1.7 GHz processor, 256 M/bytes DDR SDRAM, 30 G/byte hard drive and a DVD/CDRW combo drive, for just Dhs 4780. “We have really seen notebooks come into the mainstream,” says Joe Tabet, vice president, products division, Emirates Computers.

Over recent years, as the configuration of notebooks has improved, and the price has come down, customers have increasingly begun demanding notebook machines.

“Notebooks are becoming very powerful, offering full functionality and more importantly, they are becoming much more affordable. Vendors are offering the design and the functionality for the right price,” says Tabet.

Asgar Ali, senior sales representative for Acer products with Jumbo, also noted the keen interest shown in notebook machines by many vendors.

“Notebooks are offering the right kind of price performance that many people are looking for,” he adds.
