Lotus makes a splash at Gitex with Domino 6

Since IBM announced that it was assimilating in its subsidiary, Lotus Development, nearly 18 month ago, the messaging vendor has been quiet in the local market. But Lotus is determined to make a splash with Domino 6 (R6).

Since IBM announced that it was assimilating in its subsidiary, Lotus Development, nearly 18 month ago, the messaging vendor has been quiet in the local market. But Lotus is determined to make a splash at the show with the latest incarnation of its bread & butter messaging platform, Domino 6 (R6). The vendor boasts the package contains more than 1000 new and enhanced features.

“This release represents the biggest development in Lotus Domino ever,” says Uffe Sorensen, Lotus technology group executive, IBM Software Group, Europe Middle East & Africa (EMEA).

“We may have been a little quiet, but we still account for 49% of the worldwide spend in messaging and collaboration. We are the leader in this marketplace,” he adds.

Since mid-2000, when IBM made the decision to bind its subsidiary company closer to its corporate structure, Lotus’ standalone presence in the Middle East has dwindled.

However, the move has delivered some significant benefits both to Lotus and its end users. For example, the close collaboration between IBM’s software business units has enabled Lotus’ development team to focus on enhancing core competencies, while leveraging other areas of Big Blue’s software portfolio.

“We’re now able to focus on what we we’re best at and that is leveraging the intellectual capital of an organisation… We can leave integration to J2 environments to the WebSphere team,” says Sorensen.
