Palm crashes the low end PDA market

Palm is expanding the market for handheld devices at Gitex today, as it tries to open up the market for low end PDAs.

Palm is expanding the market for handheld devices at Gitex today, as it tries to open up the market for low end personal digital assistant (PDA) devices. According to Plam’s local general manager, Stuart Maughan, the market is confused as traditional hardware players and phone manufacturers release a stream of products with little differentiation.

“The market has dropped in size as users have become increasingly confused,” he says.
In attempt to spur growth in the PDA market, Palm is releasing its Zire entry level PDA to the local market. Palm has stripped down the functionality and focused on ease of use, which just two main buttons to access address book and calendar functions. “Zire is targeted at people that just want simple functions,” says Maughan.

The Zire device has 2 M/bytes of memory, a black & white screen and a rechargeable battery. The Zire connects to the PC using an industry standard USB cable, rather than the more expensive, cus cradle. The entry level Palm they can drop into Shopper and pick one up for Dhs395.

“This is our attempt to crash the low end of the market and in also growth the size of the whole market,” he adds.
