Broadband build out continues slowly in region says US Robotics

US Robotics is reporting a year-on-year growth of 102% for quarter three of 2002.

US Robotics is reporting a year-on-year growth of 102% for quarter three of 2002. The connectivity solutions manufacturer, present at Gitex with local distributor Aptec, says that growing demand for analogue modems, as well as the opening up of the SOHO segment to networking solutions is driving the growth.

Yusuf Syed, regional sales manager for US Robotics Middle East and India, said that while broadband solutions are gradually gaining some market share, analogue connectivity solutions continue to account for most of the company’s business in the region.

“Currently, our users, especially in small-to-medium companies and homes, still draw on 56k as their default way to connect to the web. Yet this is changing gradually, and we expect a sharp move towards broadband in the very near future, as ISPs adopt it around the region,” he said. “At the same time, we have noticed new trends: network cards and wireless solutions today represent an increasingly significant part of our business, which means that more homes and small offices today use networks to work and play.”

In order to cater for the broadband market, US Robotics has been working closely with partners such as Aptec to develop value-added partnerships. At present, analogue products are mostly marketed through distribution, although the company has worked towards bringing the correct solutions to market, including innovations such as Arabic-language packaging and web-based support initiatives.

“The internet uptake in the Middle East is still quite active, and our experience in this market has proved to us that users here, although price conscious, also seek quality solutions, and they tend to trust the brands that they recognise over cheap generics,” said Peter Blampied, director of sales and operations, US Robotics EMEA. “Our long history in the region, combined with the strength of our partnerships has also played a key role in this success.”
