2003 Discovery lands in the Middle East

Resurgent Land Rover hopes that the 2003 Discovery will provide a sizeable boost to its regional unit sales figures.

Land Rover yesterday introduced the Middle East to the 2003 Discovery. The company hopes that the third incarnation of the mid-range 4x4 will help raise total Land Rover unit sales to 2800 in the MENA region this year and 4500 next year.

“We expect this new model to grow our share in the leisure sector,” said Bill Begg, regional director at Land Rover. “This market has great potential.” The Land Rover board, he continued, has recognised that potential by placing the Middle East and North Africa eighth on its list of most important markets.

More of an evolution than a revolution, the 2003 Discovery borrows several exterior design elements from the highly acclaimed 2002 Range Rover, most notably the front headlights. Amongst the other changes and enhancements are three new interior trim options, improved braking and suspension systems and a rear parking distance control.

Three ‘core’ models of the 2003 Discovery are on sale, retailing at between Dhs99,000 and Dhs136,000 in the UAE. Two engine options are available, a 4.0 litre V8 petrol or 2.5 litre five cylinder turbodiesel. It was decided not to introduce the 4.6 litre version to the Gulf
