The Bank of Bahrain & Kuwait (BBK) is building on its existing internet services with the launch of an online payment gateway. Scheduled to go live at the end of September, the Bahrain Pay solution is based on ACI Worldwide’s Commerce Gateway offering and will provide hosted payment processing for the bank’s customers.

“BBK has already done a lot with the internet and we have built up a number of e-banking channels, such as mobile banking and e-banking for retail and corporate customers. Because of this we decided that the next step was to create a payment gateway for our users,” explains Abdul Wahid Janahi, general manger of IT, BBK.

Foremost among these users will be Bahrain’s Government. According to Janahi, a number of departments and ministries have shown interest in the payment gateway and a few have already signed up with BBK for the service. The island’s immigration department, for example, will be able to offer a Visa payment services over the internet to tourists once it has integrated the gateway into its web site.

“We have visited a number of government institutions that are very interested in [the gateway], including the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Traffic and Bahrain University. They said that they are willing to join us as soon as it goes live,” says Janahi.
