Alcatel is to install a nationwide broadband wireless network in Lebanon. The firm will supply Lebanese operator Globalcom Data Services with its LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Services) solution for their broadband access network.

GDS chose LMDS after conducting extensive field trials last year. The 26GHz network rollout already covers Beirut and its suburbs and will be extended to Tripoli and the Jounieh regions in the near future.

GDS is currently offering leased lines to corporate users such as most of the major banks in Lebanon and plans to use LMDS to provide high speed Internet access as part of its ISP offer.

According to Alcatel, LMDS offers operators a flexible, bandwidth-efficient solution that is ideally suited to accommodate increasing amounts of traffic.
