Sharjah’s Nabeel Bishtawi is now the proud owner of a LifeBook C1020 all-in-one notebook from Fujitsu Siemens. The powerful machine, which boasts hard, floppy and media drives, LAN connectivity, a built-in modem and a 15-inch LCD screen, was awarded to Nabeel following his participation in the ACN & PricewaterhouseCoopers 2002 IT security survey.

Nabeel, along with 450 others, entered the Fujitsu Siemens supported annual security survey between July and September this year. The results of the online survey were then collated by ITP before PricewaterhouseCoopers’s team of analysts crunched the data and generated a detailed report.

Those results made interesting reading for ACN’s subscribers, as the survey showed that a massive 53% of companies in the Middle East have either no information security policies or only informal information security policies in place.

Other lowlights from the survey included an apparent drop in the number of organisations that measure information security effectiveness and the fact that 72% of survey participants have failed to create a separate information security department.

Despite this doom and gloom however, there were some bright spots in the ACN & PricewaterhouseCoopers 2002 IT security survey. It appears as though substantial efforts are being made to obtain the support of senior management for security initiatives and 84% of respondents that are connected to the internet have at least implemented antivirus software.

Furthermore, 60% of the participating organisations formally recognise the cost of security in their overall IT budgets and 69% of the participating organisations expect to either increase or at least maintain their security investments at the same level as last year.
