SkillSoft & SmartForce complete merger

e-learning vendors, SkillSoft and SmartForce have merged under the name, SkillSoft. The new company will be a leading provider of e-learning solutions to the Global 5000.

The company says the merger will create the critical mass to provide global solutions, by combining SmartForce’s portfolio of IT e-learning content with SkillSoft's suite of business skills e-learning courseware, as well as its IT and business referenceware libraries.

"We are confident that the combined company, SkillSoft, will increase our competitive advantage in products, sales distribution and sales support, while enhancing our relationships with customers and partners,” says Greg Priest, formerly SmartForce’s president and CEO, who becomes SkillSoft’s chairman.

"The beauty of this merger is that it brings together two companies, each with strong offerings targeted to different needs in our target corporate customers. By combining these complementary offerings, we can provide customers with a broad range of IT and business courseware and referenceware that meets the diverse learning needs of any organisation. Conversations with our customers over the last weeks indicate they recognise and welcome this value," adds Chuck Moran, who remains president and CEO of SkillSoft.

IT.analyst.com welcomed the move saying that “the merger of SkillSoft and SmartForce joins together two of the biggest players in the market place. Aside from NETg, part of the Thomson Group, there are few others who are able to offer the breadth and depth of learning expertise. As the economy slowly recovers and the value of training to deliver competitive advantage is realised, there will be plenty of opportunities for the new SkillSoft to take advantage of.”
