Batelco has cut the cost of international phone calls to 70 countries by up to 190fils per minute.

Bahrainis can now call destinations such as the UK, USA and Canada for 100 fils per minute less. Calls to India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Iran are now charged at the same rate whether at peak or off peak times.

The price cuts are the result of negotiations with telecoms operators in other countries.

Batelco’s chairman H.E. Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa said: “Today’s announcement signals the 7th such international call price-cut in 6 years and offers proof that Batelco is serious about forcing down prices at every opportunity. In fact, making reductions to our international calls tariffs has become something of a Batelco tradition.

“The company is particularly pleased to be able to offer generous price reductions at the same time as spending heavily to provide the Kingdom with a world-class info-communications capability featuring all the latest technologies. Last year, Batelco ploughed BD40 million back into Bahrain’s communications infrastructure – and is on track to invest a similar sum this year.”

Batelco has also unveiled a series of iniatives aimed at cutting costs for businesses. The cost of transporting data has been cut by as much as 50%, whilst web hosting price cuts average 75%.

Batelco’s Chief Executive Tony Hart said: “Today’s announcement is good news for Bahrain and follows the deep cuts Batelco made in its mobile phone tariffs earlier this year when up to 40% was slashed off rentals and up to 47 % off the cost of calls. Today’s news also shows that this company has an enviable record of cutting its prices – a rarity in a monopolised market.”
