The global enterprise thin client market is booming says IDC. According to the analyst house, the market has undergone steady growth, regardless of the economic slump and vendor consolidation.

Approximately 1.4 million units will be shipped during 2002, up from the one million mark in 2001.

“Although prospects for future growth are revised downward to reflect more realistic market expectations, the opportunities for growth are still solid,” says Bob O’Donnell, IDC research director of device technology.

IDC estimates the market will enjoy nearly 30% compound annual shipment growth between 2002-2006.

The US is still the strongest enterprise thin client market, deploying more than half of the worldwide shipments in 2001. However, Western Europe is making significant inroads claming 36.8% of the total in 2002.

Despite different thin client computing models touted by vendors, Windows-based devices continue to dominate the market, accounting for nearly 75% of the total in 2001. IDC predicts that this figure will remain fairly constant through to 2006.

Wyse Technologies continues to dominate the thin client market with 38.1% market share.
