Sun has announced the availability of its latest server for small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) in the Middle East. The Sun Fire V480 server uses up to four UltraSPARC III processors and is pitched as a flexible solution to a variety of business applications.

Sun claims that the price performance ratio is very favourable when compared to Intel-based boxes running Windows. It quoted analyst Rich Partridge from DH Brown Associates: “The Sun Fire V880 has been well received in the competitive Wintel marketplace. With the large memory capacity and attractive pricing of the Sun Fire V480, Sun is well positioned to continue its success in the entry level server market, serving the needs of small and medium sized businesses,” he said.

The V480 has a number of features that Sun says cannot be matched by competitors, including 9.6 GB per second throughput, 8 MB of CPU cache and 32 GB of memory. The company says that gives it the flexibility to give it appeal across a range of vertical sectors for various applications.

“We believe the Sun Fire V480 will mirror the incredible success of the V880 in the Middle East and Africa, for which total volume units have increased 26% since its launch. The Sun Fire V480 has data centre class reliability features, it runs a data centre class operating system and Sun provides data centre class support infrastructure…all at a price below that of competing Wintel servers,” said John Foster, product sales manager, volume systems, Sun Microsystems MEA.

The V480 in basic configuration (two processors, four GB of memory and two 36 fibre channel disks) costs $27, 625 at list price, going up to $53,550 when bundled with a Sun StorEdge T3 array.
