Thuraya-2 to launch January 2003

Abu Dhabi-based company Thuraya will launch its second satellite early next year, while Boeing is contracted to build Thuraya-3.

Abu Dhabi-based company Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Company has announced it will launch its second satellite early next year.

Thuraya-2 will join Thuraya-1 at an orbital plane 44 degree East. Chairman Mohammad Omran said: “The launch of Thuraya-2 is a milestone for Thuraya, as it will complement Thuraya-1, assuring continuity of quality sevice.”

Californian company Boeing is to undertake the launch, while it has also been contracted to build Thuraya-3.

Thuraya’s mobile phones integrate GPS, GSM and satellite services to offer wireless access beyond the geography of all other operators. Its telecommunications network is available in more than 100 countries and has logged 6.5 million phone calls to date.
