Telkom South Africa has signed LightPointe and Spescom Telecommunications as sole providers of Free-Space Optics optical transmission technology.

According to Spescom, Telkom SA will be utilising LightPointe FSO products in the metro access area of their network, offering fast and inexpensive broadband solutions to customers that will complement Telkom's existing fibre optic cable network.

"The success of our bid gives both LightPointe and Spescom a significant win in a region where the need for FSO is growing substantially," said Christian L. Rook, managing director of LightPointe Europe GmbH.

"The bid itself reconfirms the demand for FSO by major telecom carriers who want the freedom to deploy high-bandwidth services without trenching streets or securing spectrum licences."

Peter Hinks, operations director of Spescom Telecommunications, was similarly pleased with the deal. "This bid award further extends the Spescom-Telkom SA longstanding relationship and will enable Telkom to maintain its status as a world-class communications company by providing innovative services to its valued customer base,” he said.
