According to the report, Alcatel dominated both terrestrial and submarine optical transport markets with a 14.2% and 44.6% share in these segments respectively in Q1. The figures mean that Alcatel commands a 15.5% share overall of the US$3.35 billion worldwide market for global optical networking.

The study, entitled ‘Optical Networks Global Quarterly Market Shares’, covers terrestrial and submarine applications with dense wave division multiplexing, optical networking, SDH/SONET and cross-connect technologies.

According to the report, Alcatel’s lead position is, amomg other reasons, due to its global reach, development work in backbone and metropolitan optical networking and long-term vision for migrating optical infrastructures to future services and revenues.

Stephane Penzo, Optical Networking analyst at RHK, remarks: “Alcatel remains the only optical networking vendor addressing all regions and all product segments. In this very challenging first quarter, the company kept its leadership, both globally (terrestrial and submarine) and locally (EMEA and Latin America).”
