Digital giant LG Electronics has confirmed an ambitious target to lead GSM mobile suppliers throughout the Middle East and Africa by the end of next year. Daunting regional projections include 2003 sales of one million units.

The bullish claim comes just four months after the Korean player entered the UAE’s competitive GSM market with two phones, the LG600 and LG510W.

"Following a highly encouraging response in these existing markets, moves are now underway to spread our regional GSM product network to Oman and Bahrain, with plans to bring Saudi Arabia on line within the next quarter," said Mr M.B. Shin, president, LG Electronics, Middle East & Africa Operations.

"LGE enjoys premium brand image throughout the Middle East and Africa,” he added. “We will leverage this positioning to ensure the trust delivered through LG’s superior service is extended to the GSM mobile segment."

LG’s regional sales targets and strategies were thrashed out at a special GSM Sales Undertaking Ceremony staged in Nairobi’s Safari Park City Hotel. Guests of honour included Mr S. T. Hong, president of LGE GSM Mobile Terminal Division and Mr J.K. Ham, marketing director.

The dynamic sales forecasts have at least won the backing of LGE’s Korea-based GSM Mobile Terminal Division. "The Middle East and Africa Operations will receive our division’s full support in striving to achieve this new target," said S. T. Hong. "We intend to bring new GSM models to this market in a competitive, highly visible manner."

On a lighter note, attendees were entertained by a fashion show exhibiting costumes from top Kenyan designer Kiko Romeao. The ‘Safari Cats,’ the country’s leading dance group, provided the meeting’s entertainment.

"It was a showcase meeting where the entertainment set the right scene," explained Shin. "LG intends to set new fashion trends in the GSM world with a commitment that its phones will be top performers."
