Hotmail is to start charging users to check other e-mail accounts through POP Mail. From mid-July users will have to pay US$19.95 and join the MSN Extra Storage service to utilise the formerly free service.

MSN Extra Storage also entitles users to 10 M/byte of memory and guarantees that the account won’t be closed down. However, the charge for using POP Mail further demonstrates how the free Internet ride is slowly coming to an end. Yahoo! and Lycos have also recently introduced charges for using POP mail.

"Those people who are already paying for MSN Extra Storage will not have any increase in fees," Parul Shah, product manager for MSN told Cnet.com. "With 110 million Hotmail users, MSN needs to drive revenue to support the resources that it takes to provide free services."
