Dubai Internet City and Jordan Telecom have signed the first stage of a pioneering data services agreement with Jordan Telecom. The move will provide each of the two providers with an off-country disaster recovery service for their regional customers, which could save millions of dollars of lost revenue in the event of a local systems crash.

The Dubai Centre is managed and run jointly by DIC and IBM, while the Jordan unit is fully owned by the national telecommunications carrier.

At a signing ceremony in Amman, the CEO of DIC, Dr Omar Bin Sulaiman said the agreement was the first in a series of planned initiatives to transform the region into a knowledge-based economy. He told reporters, “Both the Dubai and Jordan governments share a common vision to use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as the key driver towards developing a stronger regional economy.”

Jordan’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr Fawaz Zu’bi, said the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding “goes very much in the spirit of the regional vision we have begun here in Jordan.”

“It is important to attract entities to come and host their operations here,” he said, “with backup facilities outside the country. We see the IT relations between ourselves and Dubai growing in much the same way as the close links between Singapore and Australia.”

The signing took place after the DIC Chief Executive Dr Omar travelled to Jordan as a key speaker at the ITP e-government roadshow. He said the MoU could quickly be implemented depending on the uptake of both partners’ customers.
