Emirates Computers (EC) has won a series of contracts in the oil & gas sector to supply high end SGI Origin servers. The IT solutions provider has announced a deal with Landmark Graphics, an industry specific software supplier to the upstream oil businesses to deliver an Origin 300 server.

Emirates Computers has also won a deal with Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO) to upgrade an existing 32 CPU Origin 2000 with a 32 CPU Origin 3000 parallel supercomputer.

“Information technology is playing a very important role in the data management systems of companies in the oil & gas industry as it offers faster access to accurate and efficiently catalogued data, resulting in greater levels of productivity and efficiency,” comments Hani Harik, president, Emirates Computers.

“Companies like Landmark and ADCO have always led technological advances in the oil and gas industry with their investment in specialised equipment, systems and solutions that will help them achieve greater output in a more efficient and cost-effective manner,” he adds.

At ADCO, the huge volumes of data being generated on a daily basis has lead to the upgrading of its existing 32 CPU Origin 2000 computer and acquiring a new Origin 3000 class parallel processing supercomputer to be installed in its technical computing section. The upgrade also facilitates work at the Petroleum Development Division of the company.

The parallel supercomputer is going to run reservoir simulations on ADCO’s fields in order to optimise oil output from the well.

“ADCO has to continually balance the need to adopt further drilling projects against the expenses involved. Hence, we are always on the lookout for systems that will help us in reservoir simulation as this will lead to the optimum placement of wells and facilitate in maximising our oil & gas output,” explains Bernard Potier, Petroleum Development Division, ADCO.

“Emirates Computers has worked closely with us to help us explore several options and choose the best one suited to our needs. The new Origin 3000 supercomputer will greatly facilitate ADCO in minimising the financial risk to large expenditure projects.”
