Al Arabi goes online

Kuwait-based cultural magazine reaches out to global Arab audience by going online.

Kuwait-based cultural magazine Al Arabi, which celebrates its forty-third anniversary this year, has come to the conclusion that in order to reach Arabs worldwide, it must make itself available on an electronic medium. The result is, a bi-lingual Web site, developed by software solutions provider Sakhr Software.

“It is mandatory to deal with new technologies and make the best use of the Internet to establish strong bonds with Arabs wherever they reside,” stated Solaiman Al-Askari, editor-in-chief, Al-Arabi magazine. He stated that the team would attempt to make all earlier published materials accessible to readers worldwide.

As part of this effort, Sakhr Software will attempt to provide an archive of the Al-Arabi magazine from the year 1990 to 2002. After the completion of this phase, the technology solutions provider will work towards publishing older issues of Al Arabi starting from the year 1985.

The magazine professes to be “a comprehensive cultural, social, literary and scientific” window to the Arab world bringing together the “gist of the ideas of thinkers, the essence of the experiments of top scientists and the masterpieces of creative poets.” Now, Arabs worldwide can have access to this content on the Internet. Additionally, a picture archive will also be available to give Arabs a view of the cultural ethos of their region. The portal currently includes all issues published by the company after Kuwait’s liberation, in addition to interactive sections for Al-Arabi book and Al-Arabi Al-Sagheer. Among other features is also an electronic atlas to help visitors search for information by surfing maps of Arab countries.
