IBM steals the lead in database software market

IBM edged ahead of Oracle in the database management systems (DBMS) software market last year, according to Gartner Group. Big Blue garnered 34.6% of the overall market.

IBM edged ahead of Oracle in the database management systems (DBMS) software market last year, according to Gartner Group. Big Blue’s acquisition of Infomix combined with healthy sales of its DB2 databases enabled it to garner 34.6% of the market. Oracle took a 32% market share.

“The addition of Infomix products gave IBM the critical push it needed to take the market leadership position,” said Colleen Graham, industry analyst, software research group, Gartner Dataquest. “Without Infomix, the contest would have been essentially tied between IBM and Oracle, which were separated by a mere $30 million in new license revenue.”

Gartner figures revealed that the worldwide DBMS software market recorded a slight increase in new license sales during 2001. The market reported sales of US$8.8 billion last year, a 1.4% increase from the $8.7 billion earned in 2000.

In terms of vendor growth, Microsoft proved the biggest winner reporting 17.8% growth. While IBM grew by 4.3%, Oracle witnessed a drop of 4.9% in its sales from 2000.

“Given the economic slowdown, the DBMS market was a revenue pressure cooker in 2001, with the vendors competing vigorously for market share,” added Betsy Burton, vice president & research area director, Gartner Group. “More than ever clients were looking for the best cost/value equation.”
