Etisalat has introduced full roaming facilities for WASEL prepaid GSM subscribers.

WASEL users can now make outgoing calls as well as receive incoming calls whilst travelling abroad, without the need for a deposit or bank guarantee.

“The WASEL service is extremely popular and we have worked hard to introduce the full roaming facility for our customers,” said Mohammed Al Fahim, executive vice president of marketing, Etisalat. “Because of the very nature of the prepaid service, there has been a delay while international mobile operators worked to agree a framework.

“Etisalat developed our integration in-house, allowing us to launch the service before many other operators. Effective immediately WASEL customers can use their mobile to receive and make phone calls all over the world.”

The service differs from post-paid roaming, however, in that once a number is dialled the customer must wait for the system to call them back in order to connect them to the desired number.

In the absence of prepaid roaming agreements, it will not be possible to make outgoing calls in other Arab countries, although negotiations are currently underway.
