HP aims to offer unbeatable value with Procurve switches

HP has unveiled its latest range of Ethernet switches for Layers 2/3/4. The company says that the cost per port of Procurve switches will equal or undercut all its major rivals.

HP has unveiled its latest range of Ethernet switches for Layers 2/3/4. Launched in Europe on April 23rd, the company says that the cost per port of Procurve switches will equal or undercut all its major rivals and help drive its development into a major player in networking.

The Procurve 5300xl and the Procurve 4100gl will cost $99 and $52 per port respectively. The 5300 family has a number of features such as dynamic load balancing and increasing aggregate bandwidth to increase availability and maximise the use of resources. The 4100 family offers a chassis alternative to stackable switches in a compact 3U form factor.

“As IT budgets continue to be squeezed, HP Procurve continues to help customers get the most for their IT dollars by delivering on our commitment to provide the best price/performance networking solutions in the industry,” said John McHugh, general manager, HP Procurve Networking Business.

“HP’s ability to provide customers greater returns on their investment in networking has propelled HP into the number three position in the total Ethernet market and to the number two player in the Layer2 10/100 modular Ethernet switch market,” HcHugh added.

HP believes that it is the company’s continued investment in R&D that allows them to develop the technology that can break through at certain price points. “Unlike in PCs, in this market you can still make breakthroughs that give you the edge over your competitors,” said Wenceslao Lada, European business manager, HP Procurve.

The company aims to take an even stronger market position by its total cost of ownership proposition. “We want to make it so compelling from a price point of view, that people have to switch to us,” added McHugh.

The flexible and scalable nature of the product families means that customers can take a pay as grow approach to buying ports. The chassis does not cost anything and port modules can be added as required and the switching fabric will expand to include them without having to re-configure or rewire the system.
