Federal Express is attempting to increase supply chain efficiency, with the launch of its InSight system. FedEx InSight allows improved order status reporting, not just for the customer, but for any authorised third party.

The system, which is accessed through the FedEx web site, www.fedex.com, replaces separate shipment packaging numbers with an InSight login ID. Access to site allows the customer to securely view their shipment details while in transit.

The system can also be extended to customers’ suppliers and other business partners, thus providing much more information to plan inventory management and other logistics functions.

The system also includes the facility for this essential information, such as proof-of-delivery, details of customs clearance and documentation or problems with delivery, to be sent via email to these partners. This will allow them to respond to any new supply chain requirements, such as assigning more staff to a particular production line or amending specifications to meet customs requirements.

“The introduction of FedEx InSight is a direct response to customer needs using a technology solution,” explained Eric Keane, vice president of customer technology and supply chain services, Federal Express. “by providing solutions on supply chain management and how to overcome delays, customers can benefit from an unsurpassed capability to plan for and manage their inventory in motion.”

InSight will also debut a number of enhancements to standard order tracking services, with the introduction of a search function to sort shipments by size, point of origin and other factors, estimated delivery dates, and display of shipment details by company or account number. The service will be launched later this summer across the EMEA region.
