Motorola to redesign handsets

Motorola, the second largest mobile handset manufacturer in the world, is to redesign the user interface of its phones as it tries to catch market leaders Nokia.

Motorola, the world’s second largest handset manufacturer, is to radically redesign the user interface of its mobile phones in an attempt to revamp its image and catch market leader Nokia.

Phones with the new interface will begin shipping in July this year, the company announced, making it easier for users to switch brands without having to learn a whole new system.

“It’s as big as the change from DOS to Windows in personal computers,” said Tim Parsey, head of design at Motorola’s handset division.

Motorola is not looking to copy from other manufacturers, Parsey said, but will be streamlining its interface, which currently requires a lot more button pressing than other brands.

Motorola launched a new range of trendier phones in February; part of a rethink in the way the company views the mobile market.
