Intel’s Mobile P4 hits Middle East market

Intel's mobile P4 is finally here. The new processor promises longer battery life, lower power consumption and a performance that equals that of the P4.

Mobile computing was given additional impetus by Intel earlier this week with the official launch of its Pentium 4 mobile processor in the Middle East and North Africa. At the launch, were also representatives from major vendors such as Sony, HP, Dell and Compaq, who gave demonstrations of their respective laptops powered by the mobile P4. The performance of the Mobile P4 is said to equal that of the normal Pentium 4. It is wireless-enabled, comes with longer battery life, has low power consumption and is said to be the fastest mobile processor currently available.

The launch was held at the Dubai Women’s College (DWC) to mark the rapid adoption of mobile computing and wireless technology in the UAE’s academic institutions. The laptop deployment programme at the college began two years ago when 13% of the students had mobile computers. Currently, 44% of the students at DWC use laptops and by September, more than 85% of its students are likely to have laptops of their own. The college currently has wireless zones in strategic areas such as the library, cafeteria and health science laboratories but this will be extended to cover the entire campus by the end of the year.

Addressing the gathering, Gilbert Lacroix, general manager Intel MENA lauded the efforts of the government in deploying advanced mobile technology in academic institutions. “We recognise that schools, colleges, and universities already make extensive use of desktop computers as educational tools, but we believe the advent of a new generation of high-powered but cost-effective wireless notebooks such as those powered by the P4 mobile processor is set to transform traditional teaching systems,” he commented.

Also addressing the audience was Ahmed bin Byat, director general of the Dubai Technology, E-commerce and Media Free Zone, who stated that m-commerce was the wave of the future. “With this new technology, companies can build new investment models in m-commerce,” stated Byat, who added that a mobile strategy would enable knowledge workers to access corporate data anywhere, any device, anytime. “A mobile business model will give roaming workers access to their customers from a wide range of network connections in different areas.” He also expressed hope that Intel’s future chips would be developed at Dubai Internet City.
