Firewalls are proving to be the preferred method for securing networks among large enterprises, while smaller businesses favour software based security solutions, says research group, In-Stat/MDR.

In terms of vendors, Cisco Systems emerged as the preferred choice among survey participants.

"Respondents to the survey cited manageability and compatibility of devices across all segments as being a very important selection criteria and customer support as being just as important as price points in the selection of firewall technologies," says Sam Lucero, research analyst, In-Stat/MDR.

"Those vendors that can focus on these core criteria will fair the best in this highly competitive space," he added.

Although, firewalls and virus protection were pinpointed as the aspects of security most likely to be outsourced, survey participants revealed any overall dislike of outsourcing security measures.
