LG targets 10% share of Gulf GSM phone market

LG entered the UAE’s GSM phone market today with the launch of two feature-rich mobile phones, the LG-600 and the LG510W.

LG entered the UAE’s GSM phone market today with the launch of two feature rich mobile phones, the LG 600 and the LG510W. Al Seyegh Brothers Trading will act as the sole UAE distributor for the new phones, and has set up three customer service centres, in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, to back up the products’ 12-month warranty coverage.

Axiom, Telephonica, On Touch, Mobile Mubarak and Fono will also act as authorised service centres.

“We have considerable experience with LG’s digital display products and are confident that the entry of this new mobile phone range will considerably impact the market,” said Abduljabar Al Seyagh, chairman of Al Seyagh Trading. “During the period of the warranty all service will be free of charge.”

The UAE is the just the fourth country in the world to receive the new phones, which were launched in Germany, Italy and China last year.

“We chose the UAE for the regional launch because at 58.5 per cent it has the Arab world’s largest concentration of mobile phone users,” said P.C. Choi, managing director of LG Electronics Gulf. “Although we have come into the Middle East’s GSM market late, we are certain these two models have the looks and features— including the ability to send messages of up to 1024 characters [via SMS]— to attract a sizeable share of UAE mobile phone sales.”

Choi went on to say that the company has ambitions to sell 50 000 phones in the UAE by the end of the year: 10 per cent of the market. The LG-600 includes standard features such WAP, data and fax capabilities, voice dialling, PC Sync, a phone book which can store up to 500 numbers and up to 31 ring tones.

The LG 510W has voice recording, a calculator, a scheduler, speed dialling and 20 ring tones, in addition to the features of the LG-600. Each is covered by a 12 month warranty.
