Although the Hewlett and Packard families continue to speak out against HP’s proposed takeover of Compaq, the acquisition took one step closer to completion as regulators in Europe approved the deal.

In addition to making approval more likely in the US, the European Commission’s decision to approve the merger plans should assist both companies in drumming up support from share holders ahead of the shareholder voting scheduled for March. It also goes someway to ending speculation regarding HP having to shed it’s printing and imaging business.

“The commission's approval and the calling of shareholder meetings shifts the odds in favor of the deal going through,” says Gartner Group.
