VIA Technologies, Inc. today announced the introduction of a Fast Ethernet controller called the new VIA Rhine III VT6105. The VIA VT6105 can be applied to a wide range of server and workstation applications as well as the full range of PC compatible Information Appliances such as the Set Top Box, Web Pad and Information PC. It also enables LAN-on-Motherboard (LOM) options for both the desktop and mobile PC segments.

"The VIA Rhine III VT6105 gives motherboard manufacturers and system builders greater flexibility in incorporating networking capabilities with enhanced security and management functions into their products," commented Jerry Sun, special assistant to the President, VIA Technologies, Inc. "Leveraging our strengths in PC infrastructure development, the VIA VT6105 affords high performance PC and networking compatibility, and contributes another valuable building block in our 'Total Connectivity' vision."

The controller with its 3-in-1 chip solution, according to VIA, incorporates the latest networking standards. Combining the physical layer, media access controller and management layers into a single chip, the VIA VT6105 is said to offer transfer speeds of 10Mbps and 100Mbps in a low power package that incorporates performance networking with power conservation features such as Wake-on-LAN.
