Maxtor today announced that with a market share of 34% worldwide, it is currently the leading manufacturer of hard drives in the world. The company’s sales in the region increased from 850,000 units last year to 1.5 million in 2001. It also stated that it intended to leverage its core competencies to address the region’s emerging needs for storage.

“We are focusing more than ever on the Middle East,” commented Didier Trassaert, vice president, Maxtor EMEA. “With the spread of the Internet and the drive for computerisation by many governments around the region, demand for storage is bound to grow at all levels, from consumer electronics to high end systems. Maxtor is the first to introduce new storage technologies, capacities and performance in the Middle East.”

With the explosion in digital content, and Internet and e-commerce, Maxtor forecasts an upsurge in storage-intensive consumer applications. It recently launched a series of products that benefit from the highest standards of digital video and audio technologies through its “Fast Drives” initiative which gives fast file access and best multimedia handling capabilities to its drives.

“Growth in this market is bound to take place on many fronts,” commented Trassaert. “We trust that our desktop sales will continue to be strong, whereas we will also see an increase in the enterprise, high end and Network Attached Storage arenas; in addition to consumer applications.”
