Fresh from the success of the R505CT/DT, the new PCG-R505AFT is the latest in Sony’s popular Vaio laptop range to be optimised for the Windows XP operating system.

There are a few refinements on the design also, but overall it is almost identical to the R505CT/DT. There is a low-level keyboard, flushed with the face of the palm rest. There is a memory stick on the left front panel, while the docking station includes a DVD/CD-RW drive combo and floppy drive.

Essentially a multimedia computer, this Vaio is optimised for audio and video performance. Audio is boosted by front-firing speakers; the screen is a 12.1-inch TFT.

One of the biggest selling points of the Vaio range is its incessant knack to come up with interesting and genuinely useful software that comes as part of the parcel. This model comes with Digital Print 1.0 (to create digital photo albums), MovieShaker 3.2, PictureGear, and SonicStage 1.0, Sony’s latest audio-editing program.

Specifications for the Vaio PCG-R505AFT include: Mobile Intel Pentium III 850MHz processor, 256MB SDRAM, 11MB video memory (shared with main memory), and a 30GB hard disk (partitioned 15GB/15GB).
