Acer has announced the development of a highly versatile and innovative new portable PC that promises to be the next step in mobile computing. Prototype designs of the Acer convertible Tablet PC, powered by Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, were displayed at the annual Comdex exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Acer’s new convertible Tablet PC brings unprecedented ease-of-use, functionality, and versatility to the business user in the Middle East,” said Eric Tien, managing director, Acer Computer (ME) Ltd.

The Tablet PC is a broad-based industry initiative that builds on the capabilities of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, as well as digital pen and speech technologies. It extends the functionality of PCs for key computing jobs such as taking notes, marking up documents and attending meetings, all of which expand PC capabilities for business productivity.

This is one of the world's very first convertible Tablet PCs and is actually an ultra-portable laptop that converts from the traditional laptop 'clamshell mode' for keyboard input to 'tablet mode' for use with a pen, permitting users to enjoy all the functionality of a traditional laptop with the extended abilities of inputting and manipulating data with a pen. The Acer TravelMate Tablet PC will run on a Mobile Intel Pentium III processor - M, and will feature a clear and compact 10-inch TFT screen.

"Acer and Microsoft have cultivated a strong strategic relationship over the years, which allows us to manifest our shared vision of bringing the most advanced, enhanced, and easy-to-use technology to users across the globe," commented J.T. Wang, CEO of Acer Brand Operation. "Acer's innovative convertible Tablet PC brings several intuitive features into the next generation of mobile computing," Mr. Wang concluded.

The Tablet PC will provide users with all the functionality of current laptops and extend the value of pen and speech technologies as well.
