Arabia.com, the first portal to be launched in the Arab world, was declared the number one portal in the Arab world according to an independent research report. ITP’s Web Index in its latest report published this week puts Arabia.com in pole position with more than 60 million page views for the month of October, a 10 percent increase over its figures for the previous month.

“If you consider that in May of this year Arabia.com was in the number one position with 22 million page views, you get an idea of how phenomenally the Internet has grown in this region during the past year,” says Ramzi Zeine, Chief Executive Officer, Arabia.com. “September and October witnessed exceptional growth across all of our services but our chat and news facilities were in particular demand as the events of those months brought people to our site in search of updates and to exchange views.”

A host of new services and channels were introduced on the portal last year including ‘Mersal’, the first Instant Messenger in the region to provide bilingual interoperability with MSN, Yahoo and ICQ messengers. The announcement of a $20 million private placement was also another significant boost for the company and represented, according to Ramzi Zeine ‘a major vote of confidence in the dotcom industry in this region as a whole.’
