As the global recession and the events of September 11 continue to affect the economy worldwide, Giga Information Group has confirmed that trends in information technology are increasingly favouring cost saving and the extraction of more value from existing investments.

Cutting-edge technologies and dramatic paradigm shifts have taken a back seat compared to better selecting leading-edge technologies, says the analyst house.

“Companies are still looking into new technologies, but are much more careful in what they attempt to deploy, making rapid incremental changes that show near-term value,” says Giga vice president and research manager, Marc Cecere.

“Management tendencies have followed suit. We have seen increased focus in having CIOs act as leaders in business rather than senior technologists. They are being asked to help guide the business in its use of technology while still providing utility-like service,” he adds.

According to Giga’s latest research, there are five key issues facing IT decision-makers at the current time. These include the economic slowdown, demand for improved security, the continued demand for key skills, such as Java programmers, data modelers and architects, the need for consolidation and integration and faster ROI on IT investments.

“The best approach will be to build as bullet-proof an IT solution as possible, while maintaining a strong linkage to business priorities and a longer-term perspective,” says Robert Weiler, president, chairman and CEO of Giga Information Group.
